Australia has been shy in its delivery of an exploratory, music-art-seeking female artist – until now.
After a research trip to Berlin and New York in 2012, Michelle Xen embarked on a project in musical experimentation. She combined her songwriting, love of deep bass sounds and visual aesthetic in order to explore the idea of synaesthesia. As an electronic pop artist she seeks to push sonic and visual connections, then physicalise them in her wild live performances.
The ON FOR YOU EP is the culmination of these elements.
Based around the concept of building a world for a song, Michelle Xen takes an experimental approach to songwriting - she pushes the art/music boundaries, extending the songs into cross-disciplinary projects. Images, garments, collaborations and performances weave directly into her music-making process, allowing for work that is both idiosyncratic and distinctive.
Whether it’s a future synthesis of independent Pop or a cross-disciplinary response to art and music, this seamstress of sound experiments has begun an unquestionable electronic evolution in Australia’s backyard which is export-worthy, airplay-ready and synth-heavy.
